Another week gone by, another week of killer music lurking just around the corner. We caught some wild ones this week, including our good friend Mitch Alexander, the mastermind behind microCastle, one of the most innnovative up and coming labels in the scene. Don’t believe me? Look at the names attached to their most recent string of releases and listen to the clips and you’ll see why we’re all a-buzz.

1. Miquel Santos & Philip Michael Andersson – Endless (Guy J remix) [Faith Music]

The title on this one is absolutely apropos – this Belgian duo teams up with the unstoppable Guy J on a track that exists somewhere between the ethereal and the danceable. It’s got drive enough to get everyone moving, but the spaciness to start out a set at the same time. Absolutely in love with this one – it’s out earlier this year on Faith Music who have a penchant for teaming up Belgian acts with world-class remixers. It’s a formula that’s working.

2. Cid Inc. – Refrost [Lowbit]

Henri Hurtig, one half of the massive early-to-mid 2000’s group Mashtronic has struck out on his own with a vengeance. Over the past couple years he’s made an identity for himself that’s starting to turn heads, and none more than with this track. Out as a re-release with remixes on the Lowbit imprint, the Steve Haines remix is a banger as well, but the original really does shine its own bright light. Cid Inc is a name you’ll hear repeated over and over on this show, that’s a guarantee.

3. Superstrobe – Changes [Suicide Robot]

This track was a complete fluke, actually – one of those happy accidents that make you love your job. I was searching for a very different “Changes” when this popped up on my browser – clicked on it on a whim and was immediately entranced by the hook. The track only grows bigger each listen. Superstrobe is the German duo of Holger J. and Manuel W. and they have a surprisingly solid discography for a techno group I’ve never heard of. This track should be all the convincing anyone needs to take a closer look.

4. Monaque – Resolutions (Spooky remix) [microCastle]

Hand-picked for the show today by label-boss Mitch Alexander, Spooky does a wickedly driving and bass-centric remix on an original that was very very light and floaty in a tech-house way. This redux puts it smack dab in the middle of slamming progressive mid-tempo. It actually reminds me somewhat of Luke Chable at the top of his game with its relentless bassline and drum loops and rising melody. Top notch stuff.

5. Weekend Heroes – Interlagos [Unreleased Digital]

I’m telling you folks, these Israeli producers are superstars in the making and if you need any convincing of that, just listen to the bassline on this track. They’ve proven before they can remix fantastic source material, as with Jerome Isma’ae’s “Trouble in the Redlight District” – with “Interlagos” they prove they can be song-smiths as well. The hook is strong enough to be repeated over and over without getting tired, the bassline is incredible, and the crescendo is properly handled for crowd pleasing.

6. Komytea – Professional Killers (Jerome Isma-ae & Daniel Portman remix) [Anjunadeep]

Anjunadeep certainly has a penchant for bringing recent tracks back into the fold on their compilations – this track is no exception to that. About a year ago, this track was all the buzz because it was a remix done by two of the biggest names in melodic progressive house – a year later it still shines, this time on Above & Beyond’s “Anjunadeep:01” compilation. It’s big room stuff without all the excess, just well done, fat, banging, trance-inspired progressive.

7. Spencer & Hill – Oldschool (Club Mix) [Tiger Records]

Peter Spencer and Josh Hill make up the duo Spencer & Hill, one of the production acts that has literally changed the face of top 20 progressive house. Their flair for huge-sounding beats, tight percussion, and flat-out trance-cheese synth lines have resonated right in line with the onslaught of such music coming out all over the globe. Whilst never the most subtle or sophisticated of producers, “Oldschool” showcases precisely house infectious their tracks can be. It’s off their massively popular artist album “Housebeats” out on the Tiger Records imprint.

8. Robbie Rivera & Dero – 1980 (George Acosta remix) [Black Hole Recordings]

Ibiza summer is in full swing at the moment, and no night more talked or buzzed about than Robbie Rivera’s “Juicy” at the world-famous Amnesia nightclub. As they do every year, the inevitable compilation is chock-full of big time, over-the-top, summer anthem progressive. This track by Rivera himself along with the Argentinian progster Dero and George Acosta on the remix rises above the cheese for a moment to offer something of real interest. Love the whining melody on this one and the just-sparsely-enough 80’s inspired break beats.

9. Tyler Michaud – Break the Rules (Manuel de la Mare dub) [Babylon]

Though he may be without much name-recognition yet, Boston-native Tyler Michaud is well on his way in the right direction. He’s notched appearances on some of the biggest labels and producers in progressive and trance, this track here with one of our favorites, Manuel De La Mare. The track is actually two years old, which blows my mind – It certainly fits right in with modern fare, and it’s getting second life on an interesting little EP called “Vocal House Anthems” by Babylon.

10. Mauro Picotto – Motion [Alchemy]

Ten years ago, Italian legend Mauro Picotto was the shit – his records were everywhere. One of the first records I ever bought was his techno-trance hard-dance “Like this, Like that.” Music certainly has changed since then, and so has Mauro Picotto – he never really went anywhere. He’s been steadily releasing material and an artist album every couple years – for me this time, he’s hit paydirt. The straight-forwardly named “2010” is one of the best of the year with a number of standout tracks – none more so than “Motion” with it’s warm gated drive and fantastic breakdown melody. It’s like Tron in summer – big fans.
