Nothing like a week on hiatus to make one miss the show, eh? Well 7 days off has us feeling a bit dark and dirty, like we’ve been hiding a secret or something…we’re not telling. What we are telling is the story behind some killer music this week, twisted and off-beat just like the mood we’re in, before special guest Antillas rescues us with some top-form uplifting pop-progressive to finish out the show. 1. Cari Lekebusch – A State of the Art [H-Productions]

Sweden! It’s not just about the furniture people, it’s becoming one of the new capitals of progressive-minded techno and house. Cari Lekebusch can tell you all about that – this Stockholm-native is in top form on “A State of the Art” which is newly out on his own H-Productions imprint. Love the spacey intro, the kick and bass is fatter than I even expected, and it’s all polished (or is that swede-ished:) off with a breezing sci-fi pad that whisks the song along. Wonderful stuff.

2. Alan Fitzpatrick – Paranoize [Drumcode]

The United Kingdom isn’t necessarily known for its techno, but it’s making Berlin and Detroit run for their money this year with some truly fantastic artist albums. Alan Fitzpatrick’s “Shadows in the Dark” is most certainly one of the best slices of techno this year which has been backed up with some major sales chart presence. “Paranoize” is Alan at his best, driving, dark, bassheavy peak time stuff to make you sweat.

3. Spektre – Always Too Much (Matt Cooper remix) [Respekt Recordings]

And speaking OF English techno, this one has been sitting on the shelf just begging to get into the show for several weeks now. How can you pass up Matt Coopers rolling production with Spektre’s flair for the oddly dramatic and edgy vocals? We finally couldn’t, and here it is on the second installment of “Casting Shadows Without Light” remixes on Spektre’s own Respekt Recordings.

4. Harry Choo Choo Romero – Phuture (Joris Voorn remix) [Ovum Recordings]

Both of these guys you should know, and from different perspectives. Harry “Choo Choo” Romero is a house legend and founder of the collossal Subliminal Records with fellow giant Eric Morillo. Joris Voorn is the wunderkind from Holland who has elevated himself to the elite status of a must-have producer, especially in the past year where he’s been the king of charts a couple times. His specialty of mixing Chicago with Detroit is on display here with an undeniably *house* track twisted techno…we love it. It’s undeniable. Run and get this one.

5. Glenn Morrison – Under a Pink Cherry Tree [Morrison Recordings]

I really do think that Glenn Morrison saves his most interesting work for his own Morrison Recordings. The beat of this track is tech to core, but the melody on top is so identifiably vintage Glenn Morrison, it’s impossible to say that he’s fallen too far from the tree. At the end of the day, the track speaks for itself. It’s deep, it’s heavy, and it’s massive. Top notch work from a producer who’s not afraid to think outside the genre box.

6. Style of Eye – Girls [Ultra]

So this little track, and little in minutes not size mind you, is a year old. It’s not on any top 100 charts. It’s not on any compilations. But it’s probably the most listened to track of the summer. Why? Further PROOF that Lady Gaga isn’t just a crazy pop cheese-monster, this track has been played at every one of her world-wide “Monster’s Ball” tour performances this summer…so add it up folks. Hundreds of thousands of unsuspecting teens, gays, straights, and other pop-heads have been exposed to Style of Eye’s particular brand of awesome-ness. Huge congrats to him, and a huge track win such attention.

7. Moonbeam feat. Blackfeel Wite – Song for a Girl (Moguai remix) [Black Hole Recordings]

I told y’all we’re feeling off-beat and twisted today. This one probably takes the cake. Unconventional rhythms, some beautiful melody work combined with a bassline that is downright WICKED overwhelm an otherwise passable vocal…it’s too huge to be called an outisder, so we all just better make some room. Rowdy work from Moguai, the german Deadmau5 has picked to inherit the mau5dom…we’re starting to believe it’s possible.

8. Funkagenda – Astana [Funk Farm]

The UK’s Funkagenda, staple of the ToolRoom diet and, dominator of charts has turned out yet another bomb. This time in the form of that chugging techno progressive that the likes of Jerome Isma-ae has been championing for the past year. It fits Funkagenda well, and there’s another great remix on the EP from ThreeSix. We felt like the original shone the brightest, and there is some truly genius pad work going on in this one that’s easy to miss. Turn it up for this one.

9. Tomcraft – 414 (Can’t Get Away) [Great Stuff Recordings]

Tomcraft is a techno legend, he’s been around since before I was even old enough to play music on a walkman…and if that sounds like I’m calling him old, just listen to this track and you’ll realize it doesn’t even matter, because this is pure wave-your-hands-in-the-air and sing-along massiveness. He’s adapted himself amazingly well throughout the years, and this is one of the best singles he’s turned out in a while. It’s out on the major German label Great Stuff Recordings who similarly always seems to keep themselves relevant.

10. Alex Armes – Take this Away (Dankann vs. Antillas remix) [unreleased]

Antillas, our guest this week from Italy, is a force to be reckoned with. Perfectly in tune with what is blowing up dancefloors around the world this summer, he really has come almost out of nowhere. The vocals on this are decent, but the production is outstanding. Some of the warmest bass work of the summer. No doubt a chart topper. It’s what’s big right now.
