Howdy everyone and welcome to the first official “monthly” edition of Fresh Produce. As expected, it was extra difficult this month to select a measly ten tracks from all the kick ass music out there, but we think we managed pretty well. Summer is fast approaching, and dancefloors are starting to heat up which means major releases on the horizon and right on our doorstep.

1. Pig & Dan – Lost Within [Addicted Records] 
Alumni of the 2010 top 10, the Spanish duo is back to a roaring first half of the year. Original here which is always a treat from these oft remixers, deep bassline and spacey Sci-Fi horns do the job on a throbbing mid-set slice of progressive techno. It’s big room fare with headphone simplicity.

2. Samuel L. Session – Inner City Dust (Part 5) [Figure]
Waaaay back around this time last year, Mr. Session released the first half of this now 8-track expermient in variation on a theme. What was first very very deep in a bass-driven way, has become lighter and trippier, like coming out of a tunnel. Truly, one of Samuel L. Sessions most wonderfully successful concept pieces, each mix has a musicality all its own.

3. Moby – Victoria Lucas (Sasha remix) [Little Idiot]
Moby provides the source material, Sashe provides the prog dancefloor sensibilities…kinda hard to miss with that one. And they don’t. It’s certainly nothing nearly as bluntly stated as anything that Prydz or Laidback Luke would do, that’s never been Sasha’s style even when he was more bombastic, but nevertheless it’s hook-laden in its own way. Enough to make one turn up the volume several times for proper rocking-out-age.

4. Infusion – Love & Imitation (Luis Junior remix) [Vapour Recordings]
Luis Junior…ever since busting onto the scene from virtually nowhere on Bedrock last year, he’s done nothing more than turn out remix after remix that tops the previous in terms of polish, drive, and unique ingenuity. Steadfastly on the techno side of the progressive coin, his reworking of the Aussie outfit Infusion reminds me just how much has changed since the Junkie XL days of the early 2000’s (see “Legacy” remix). Crisp and crunchy as a celery stick.

5. Extrawelt – Titelheld (Patrick Kunkel remix) [Cocoon Recordings]
Another track off of Cocoon’s 11-year remix compilation of their greatest hits – this one certainly qualifies. There was a time when Extrawelt was unstoppable in the eyes of the emerging Berlin techno scene – the Border Community board, back when it still existed, would be all a-flutter whenever one of their EP’s was released. “Titelheld” was my favorite of them all, with its grinding verses and epic chorus where the melody broke through like sunlight. Patrick Kunkel does an *excellent* job giving the old track an updated, more aggressive bassline and then allowing the original melody line to really do its work.

6. Cirez D. – Full Stop [Mouseville]
Sticking with the very techno theme today, we get a little rowdier with a brand new track from our favorite Prydz moniker Cirez D. It has that double time quality to it that is fun to insert inside your normal 4/4 set, if it works well. The effort would be worth it in this case – as always with Prydz’ work, the hook is undeniable. This is a festival track already making the world-wide circuits. Keep an ear out for it.

7. Amber Jolene & Timo Garcia – Lady Luck (Matt Lange remix) [Yoshitoshi]
A big original for the Yoshitoshi boys back last year, it gets the remix treatment here from American progster Matt Lange who does an excellent job of filling out a big room sound with some wicked melody stabs and pairing that at the right moments with the sparse vocal. It’s a track the really drives, and it’s ramping up our show today.

8. 16 Bit Lolitas & Glowfield – Calling New York (Davi remix) [Bits And Pieces]
It’s actually very very rare that you ever see a remix of a 16 Bit Lolitas track, something that is obviously exceedingly rare in this industry. It’s a fairly ballsy statement, actually, to say that your original work will stand on its own. Well, they relented in this instance and a case could be made that they could benefit from acquiescing more often. Another american, this time DAVI based out of hometown Los Angeles, is on the remix duties. Can’t remember the last time two Americans were featured on the same show, let alone back to back.

9. Jerome Isma-ae & Weekend Heroes – A Monster in my Closet [Jee Productions]
The battle of the basslines today is probably won right here, but that’s no surprise really. It honestly makes up for a lot of some pretty standard song-writing. When you can get to the level of polish that this outfit does, you don’t have to reinvent the wheel to make it roll. Solid dance floor stuff here, something that we expect nothing less from the German A-list talent Isma-ae, and the newly burning Israeli superstars Weekend Heroes.

10. Fritz Kalkbrenner – Facing the Sun (Paul Kalkbrenner remix) [Napith Music]
I like my sets to have a circular quality, so we’re ending today very nearly where we started. The Kalkbrenner brothers, most specifically Paul who is on remix duties here, might arguably have been the biggest stars of the “Berlin Techno” scene that changed the face of techno at large in the early to mid 2000’s. His back catalogue is mind-blowing, and he’s clearly not lost his touch. I’ve always been a sucker for a good unconventional melody, something that Kalkbrenner has always been a master at. I recommend turning it up to eleven on this one, it’s meant to be blasted.
