Happy Halloween!!!
Yes, today was (still is, technically) Hallow’s Eve. It was never the biggest holiday with my family, per se, but I do remember dressing up in the way way back with my cowboy boots, a pair of six-shooters, and my custom mom-made tan shirt with fringe. That’s right. I was a fringe cowboy. It’s a specific kind.
When all my brothers had come along into existence, I remember the primo spot to go trick-or-treating was Lundbar Hills. For those of you who don’t know, I grew up in the pretty podunk Northern California town of Eureka. And Lundbar Hills was as close as we got to a real solidly middle-class housing development. And built, mind you, by the golf course, so…you know those peeps be bougie. Really, the appeal was how close all the houses were together. And the neighborhood there knew that kids were getting carpooled in there, so they stocked up. It was the best.
Anyway, *this* Halloween was spent doing something I actually don’t think that I’ve done yet while living down here in LA; hand out candy to trick-or-treaters. And it makes sense; almost everyone out here lives in an apartment building, and almost all of those apartment buildings have locked front doors. Our current building does. Our last one did. Kind of a big trick-or-treat deterrent. This year, a couple of our friends are in a house in K-town, which is, in fact, a nice enough area to have throngs of kids out in costume gathering candy from their surprisingly normal neighbors. It was tons of fun. Lots of super-heroes. My favorites are the kids at age 11/12 – they’re still kids enough to want to dress up and candy still excites them, but they’re also *just* old enough to start feeling self conscious about doing “kids” things. I distinctly remember that age. Looking down at my fringe-covered cowboy shirt. Thinking, “damn…I want to wear it…but it’s got fringe on it for godsakes.”
Also got some new stuff done with this here old blog today too – all the old Fresh Produce posts are now nestled securely within these Incrediblog walls. And they look goooood 🙂 So check those out.
That’s all for now. I have an iPad to buy at midnight. Wish me luck.
