I sat down to eat dinner and watch a movie tonight, and I just wanted to see an adventure. I didn’t need the angsty hero, or betrayal, or even the tortured past. I just wanted an adventure.
We don’t really make movies like that any more, so I turned to Netflix and I started looking at the “classics.” And, I don’t mean the real classics, I just mean the adventure movies from the 50s, 60s, and to a lesser extent the 70s. Like, there was one several months back called Robinson Crusoe on Mars that I would love to have watched tonight. Alas, it’s not on the rotation right now of Netflix streaming movies…but Journey to the Center of the Earth was, and it was perfect.
It wasn’t actually as good as I’d hoped, to be honest. The characters were either rather stupid or unlikable. BUT, it’s a journey down to the center of the earth. How can it not be amazing? Classic Jules Verne, and this was the first time it had been put on the silver screen. Plus, I really love movies where good chunks of the story is literally just the characters walking around finding cool stuff. Like caverns and ruins and just fun stuff like that. Exploring. I used to do that all the time when I was a kid, and it very much still appeals to that part of me.
Then, after the Ho came out from taking a nap, which I’d done earlier myself after walking the dogs, we both saw that The Sword in the Stone was available to stream on Netflix, and so we hunkered down and watched that one through where Merlin and Madame Mim duke it out in the forest.
Man, that’s another movie that I freaking loved when I was a kid. We didn’t own that one on VHS, so it was one that was a treat to watch whenever we got the chance. Being a fish, a squirrel, a bird. Having a wizard as a tutor and a best friend. I mean, it was just such a fun movie. Both of us were laughing from the very first scene, in fact. It’s a very, very funny script. Disney really has had the corner on that for such a long time. Merlin has a sidekick owl who’s just all grumpy and sass. Archimedes. Hysterical character.
Early on in the day, I got my writing done, more good stuff there, and then did a bunch of maintenance around the building. I’d scheduled it that way, so that I could get it all done in one fell swoop. That was nice. Then, I finished my writing, ate some food, and took the pups on a walk. I have to walk them out the door by 4:30 at the LATEST so that it’s not dark by the time we get home. 4:30!!! That’s just some bullshit. Hate that about this time of year.
On the other hand, it’s nice to have a cool crispness in the air. The weather down here in the winter *is* magical. It’s snowing almost everywhere else in the universe, and we’re getting 70º weather for thanksgiving. Not that I’ve been able to take much advantage of the nice weather given how much I’m working at the moment 😛
Speaking of, it’s time to go to bed and get some sleep for work tomorrow. Lots to do, and I want to finish on schedule so that the Ho and I can watch her Lifetime movie, which is called Seasons of Love at 9pm. Watch that shit!
Good night!
