It was thanksgiving today. Duh. I’m sure we were all aware of that 😛 Unless! Unless you’re from overseas and not American, then you may or may not know that today was Thanksgiving. See, there was totally a reason I led tonight’s blog with the statement I did.
We had a badass Thanksgiving today, we really did. Liz’s parents came into town, we had pretty much everything arranged and ready to rock, and then Kristen and Arg came over and we hung out. Argeesht and I went for a walk with the pups, which was totally cool, and by the time we got back Ali was over at that point and making her contributions to the feast.
Lastly, Gary and Derrick (spelling? so many ways to spell that name…) came over, who we’d seen a month or so prior for a dinner and a hang out. So, man, we were stacked to the gills with people this year. It was awesome. The food was amazing, obviously, and then we all kinda settled down and watched Love Actually as is the tradition.
Then us “kids” settled in for a rousing game of Cards Against Humanity, which I won. I was pretty damn good at that game for quite a while, but in the past year or so, I don’t think I’ve won once. Tonight I did by the *skin of my teeth*. It was a super good game, for reals. I think there were four of us with only one more card to get to win the game, so it was super close which is the best way a game can go. Some really funny stuff all around, and a great crowd to play with.
Then we packed everything up, after eating some Ralph’s pumpkin pie (with home-made whipped cream, obvs) that was really damn good. Not quite as good as TJ’s pumpkin pie, I think, but really good. There more left in the fridge right now calling my name…but yeah, packed up food for ourselves and our guests, and then the night settled down.
I sat and fast-forwarded through the Niners Seahawks game…which was a mistake. We got trampled. It’s the first game that I’ve seen where Kaepernick, our quarterback, actually *clearly* lost us the game. Poor decisions everywhere. People who actually know stuff about football have been saying that Kap has been playing like shit for a long time now, but tonight was very clear even to me. He was a bad quarterback tonight. Both defenses were in the face of the quarterback tonight, and Russell Wilson (who QBs for the bad guys) found ways to make little plays here and there to move the ball down field. Kap did not at all. There was only ONE touchdown tonight. If we’d had merely a so-so showing tonight offensively, we would have won the game. Instead, we managed 3 points and put the nail in the coffin on the season. The Niners will not be in the playoffs this year, and that sucks. We’re also going to lose Jim Harbaugh in the offseason, and that also really sucks. The guy is a winner, and he brought a winning culture to a team that had no business being as good as they were back in 2011. We’d had the good defense for a while and not won with it until Harbaugh came along and jump-started Alex Smith. Three NFC title games in three years (and a Super Bowl appearance)…the guy’s a winner and we’re going to let him walk away because he doesn’t get along with upper management, and he’s got a chip on his shoulder this year because they want to get rid of him.
Anyway…shouldn’t have watched the niner game, obviously 😛 what can you do? Hopefully we’re back to being a good team next year. We’ll see.
The sportsy angst honestly doesn’t really factor into the day, though. It was a wonderful, wonderful day, and has given me plenty of things to be thankful for.
I am thankful this year especially for my family. My mom’s health in particular, as she continues to do well post-surgery.
I am also thankful for my mom’s iPad, so that we can FaceTime together and I actually got to see her (and my brother Seth and Dad) on Thanksgiving, across 800 miles.
I’m thankful for Scott’s iPad too, and his togetherness when it comes to reaching out to family on the holidays. I’m sure I would have forgot some of these events were it not for him calling me first.
I’m thankful for an amazing wife for putting together such an incredible feast, which she does every year with seriously incredible results. The Thanksgivings that we’ve shared together these past four or five years (after I stopped taking stupid shifts at Maggiano’s) have seriously been wonderful.
I’m thankful for the opportunity to indulge in my imagination. Writing these projects this year has been an exercise in true happiness, and I feel incredibly lucky to be able to be doing that.
I’m also very thankful for my editing and apartment jobs, which have paid the bills, put a roof over my head, allowed me to contribute significantly to our amazing wedding, and entirely enabled me to turn my life around to pursue the things I’d really love to be doing.
I’m thankful too that Liz’s parents, my in-laws (which is soooo weird to say after all these years!), were able to come down and spend the holiday with us. It’s the first time that’s happened, and I couldn’t be happier to share it with them.
I’m thankful for our dogs, Coops and Coco for bringing so much happiness and companionship into my life.
I’m thankful too for all my friends, those who were here today, and those I got to send texts to, for enriching my life and mostly just being so fun and making me laugh.
I’m thankful for the watching “Love Actually” tradition and kicking off the Christmas season. It’s almost here. Craziness I say!
Man, I’m thankful for so much stuff, I really really am. I could go on and on, but I think that’s pretty good for now. I honestly feel thankful for my life and everything in it. I’m where I want to be right now, and I’m very thankful for that. And happy.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I hope you all had a wonderful, wonderful day and have a bottomless goodie bag of thanks. G’Night!
Oh! And, PS…I totally got my writing done today before all the madness began. Hells yeah! 🙂
