Went to go see A Wrinkle in Time tonight, and guys…holy shit. There are SO MANY parallels between Starstuff and that story. Wow. They’re definitely very different stories and worlds, for sure, but the PARALLELS. And I swear to baby jesus I have never read that book. After watching the movie, I feel like I should 😛 But, yeah…and I take that to mean, actually, that I was indeed on the right track when I came up with that story idea.
Here’s something I don’t think I’ve ever actually written for y’all to read. There *is* a very specific story that I “stole” Starstuff from, and very intentionally so. It’s a movie called The Journey of Natty Gann. It’s from Disney’s weird period in the 1970s to late 80s when they lost Walt and didn’t know who they were as a studio. Right before the renaissance that started with Mermaid. But, I remember watching that movie as a kid and being absolutely taken by it.
It’s set in the depression, and it’s about a girl whose father has to leave her behind because of work, but the people she’s left with are horrible, so she decides to take off across the country to go find her father. She meets a wolf along the way (in addition to a very young John Cusack), and they travel on trains and go through mountains and stuff, and she’s finally reunited with her father. That was quite literally the inspiration for Starstuff from day one. Obviously it’s evolved quite a bit from that germ of an idea, but that was the starting point.
Anywho…had an off day today. Kinda got sucked into the Internet oblivion early on, but rallied in the end with a truly wonderful time hanging with the Ho, Liz A, and Lateefa during and after watching Wrinkle.
It was a good day 🙂
