You know…there’s always a post-milestone malaise for me, at least emotionally.
See, I actually did work today. I got some outlining and brainstorming done for By Any Other Name, some good stuff…but no actual words on the page. Sigh. And, that’s the let-down, I think, of coming off the hard push to finish something–or at least finish a stage of something–there’s always a bit of fatigue, and a bit of letting the foot off the gas pedal.
I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. I can’t go full-tilt all the time. But, then again, it’s been a struggle to *find* that full-tilt gear for quite a while. I haven’t put in a full day of just hitting the pages in…I can’t remember. And those are the best days. Those are the days when shit gets done.
That makes me think about the Warriors 😂 I was listening to them today as they played out in New York and I was walking the dogs, and they were behind going into the fourth quarter. The Knicks are not a good team, and they were 10 points down for a hot second. To the Knicks!
…and then in the fourth quarter, they just flipped this switch. A switch that rockets them up into the stratosphere, the same switch they flip when it comes to the playoffs. They outscored the Knicks 47-16 in the fourth quarter. They won by 24 points.
I want to find that switch with my writing.
It’s not something that I can rely on day in and day out, and that daily grind is TRULY the most important part of being a pro…but that “switch” is how we meet deadlines. It’s the extra effort to push us into that “finishing energy.” That switch gets shit done.
Things to work on.
As I sit here tonight, writing so early because I have to get up super early, it occurs to me that I can actually try and *schedule* that shit. I can schedule practicing working all day…I can look on my calendar and plan for days that I’m just going to go off the grid, and find that next gear, practice flipping that switch.
I’m going to do that. Right now.
So, that’s all for tonight. This weekend is a travel weekend. Thinking about taking some video and such 🙂 we’ll see.
How do you flip the switch?
