Today, Josh and I started a brand new project.
It’s called Film School. It’s a podcast, and it’s similar in format to Two Guys One Trek in that we’re sitting down together and watching something, then talking about it afterwards. We also have a mission, at least our FIRST goalpost that we’re reaching towards: to watch the AFI’s Top 100 Films of all time. How dope is that?
The similarities with TG1T are plentiful, but there are a couple things we’re doing differently. One is that we’re actually doing some research on the films we’re watching; providing some context to why. And that kind of ties into a slightly different takeaway that connects to the actual title of the podcast: we’re sitting down to watch some of the best films ever made to think about them as fans, critics, viewers, and storytellers ourselves. We’re watching to figure out why they’re considered one of the best ever, and what lessons can be learned about what they did, how they did it, and how they impacted film and storytelling.
I’m so excited.
The first movie was Ben-Hur, which was QUITE the epic watch. Grand in scale and scope, a true epic of a story. We really, really enjoyed it. Thoroughly. I easily enjoyed it the most I ever have, and I’ve actually seen the movie now three times. The first was back when I was a kid. The second was a year or two ago, I think because it was playing on one of the premium channels and I didn’t really remember the movie. And now for the podcast, because it’s considered to be one of the best movies ever made. To be honest…if there is ONE reason that movie makes the list, it’s the chariot race. That scene is spectacular. It still plays today, in this day and age. It’s gripping, exciting, impressive…it’s cinema.
We both enjoyed the movie, and we both had a lot to say about it. No idea what will end up happening with this podcast, but we’re excited to strike out on our own into new territories, have some fun, and learn a lot along the way.
I was nervous about this new podcast. It’s been a while since we ended TG1T, and as Josh put it, we were both worried that we didn’t have our sea legs…and we DON’T yet for this podcast, because it IS something new…but damn if we didn’t slide into a new-but-familiar rhythm pretty damn fast. This podcast is different. For sure. But it’s also so much the same.
Anywho…that was my day. Did some apartment stuff in the morning, and hung out with the pups. It was a great day.
Work tomorrow, and then we’re off to the great north of Portland for the holidays. Can’t wait.
See you guys tomorrow 😉
