I’m back.
I had a wonderful day today. Wonderful.
Got building stuff done pretty much first thing, beyond walking the pups and eating breakfast, both of which I was able to do on time.
Then I had time to edit down the Film School episode for this week, which is awesome. Two days ahead of schedule. And I got a bunch of errands done after that before I had to finally go into work. Dropped off good will stuff, gassed my car, parked in the new offsite parking for work and figured out how long it takes to get there and back (about 15 minutes…which means getting up 15 minutes early whenever I’m going into the office…blech).
And work was awesome, too. Excited to help out with the project they asked me in for. It’s a cool twist on some already existing stuff, actually. I like it. Excited to see how it turns out.
I got my writing done, which was an hour of review research. Forever war was pretty much beloved for its extended metaphor for the Vietnam War/SciFi innovation using time dilation in space travel…beyond that, it’s a pretty mediocre book.
I’m reading Starship Troopers right now for the very first time…and holy shit. My Military SciFi jam isn’t usually Space Marines, but this is EASILY the best-written book of the ones I’ve read so far. Which shouldn’t be surprising, I know–it’s Heinlein for chrissake–but, you guys…he’s such a good writer. Holy crap. Everything is interesting and well-paced. Everything. Even boot camp, and his proclivity for rants on politics, morality, and sociology. All stuff that’s rife in the other Military SciFi books I’ve read thus far, and none of them holds a candle.
The book has aged remarkably well. Remarkably. SciFi is still using power armor, probably the real SciFi gadget that Heinlein invented. And his passion for the story he’s telling, how much he loves reliving his soldier days…it all just reads so wonderfully.
It makes me remember what it is I’ve been missing in my own writing, something I’ve been trying to get back to this whole time, I guess: passion. Excitement. Glee. I know, it’s a weird thing to feel from the writing of such a violent and sometimes political in an offputting way kind of book…but that’s exactly what I feel from him: pride and glee. Pure love for that culture and lifestyle. It’s infectious.
Anyway…that’s all for tonight except to say that the Warriors played an excellent game tonight. I got to watch the whole thing, very satisfied after a long day. AND played Beat Saber for a bit; little workout.
Night!
