Guys! It’s finally back to savings time, aka not getting dark at 4 in the afternoon. Undoubtedly, this is the harder switch; getting used to going to bed early, getting up an hour earlier. That sucks. But the time itself does not 🙂
I had another very productive day. Got a lot done, including seeing Captain Marvel, which was not perfect, but very solid and definitely worth going to see in theaters. Brie Larson is perfection, and Goose for prez in 2020.
It’s rather amazing to me how good even the “middling” Marvel movies are. They’re all watchable, all entertaining, and they all “work.” With maybe the exception of The Incredible Hulk. Marvel stands for quality. I *know* going to see one of their movies that I’m going to enjoy myself, and shit…who else can say that? Pixar? That’s about it. Truly amazing. We’re taking it for granted right now, I think, just how rare that is.
Almost done with Starship Troopers. It’s dragging here at the end. But, the final battle is about to kick off, and I’m looking forward to that. That’s an obligatory scene, right there, for a war story: the big battle. Any war story that doesn’t have it will always feel like a let-down. Troopers has it.
I’ve really enjoyed the book. It’s easily the best of the military SciFi books I’ve read over the past few weeks. Easily. But, it does drag during the political and social philosophy sections. I understand that’s why Heinlein wrote the book in the first place, to talk about and explore those concepts through the metaphor of SciFi…but I’m with Stephen King on this one: the theme of a story should arise from its plot and characters, not the other way around. Don’t preach to your audience. Wrap up those concepts in compelling circumstances. Don’t just spout them out. Heinlein struggles with that, and his stories are the lesser for it. It’s a lesson I hope I learn.
Read a friend’s pilot, which I rather enjoyed. Did some accounting stuff. Ran an audition with bear. Got the laundry done. Took a nap. Walked the pups in the morning and the evening. Took a little nap. Watched the Warriors lose to the Suns, arguably the worst team in the NBA. Oof. Not good. But a great day.
And now it’s 11pm, and I have to go to work in the morning.
I’m feeling like I’m closing in on knowing enough about this genre to be able to write a book its audience will love. I think I have one more book I want to read. Maybe two. And that while I’m reading them, I should begin to sketch my outline and characters.
With that, I’m off. Sleep tight, y’all. Don’t let the bed bugs bite.
