We watched Dune tonight! It’s…much, much better than the Lynch film, or the miniseries on SyFy channel (by a mile). We liked it. It’s not perfect, for sure, but it did the job.

“Did the job” is fine. I had higher hopes, given the buzz about it. It was gorgeous. GORGEOUS. The cast was actually great. And I dig the pacing, actually taking time to build the story and the world. The book needs a 2-part story if you’re not going to do a limited series with it.

But, it was a bit slow in parts because the objectives—what we were doing and why it was important—weren’t always clear. I thought the music was REALLY heavy-handed and distracting. There were too many ‘vision’ scenes. And mostly…the relationship at the beating heart of this movie is between Paul and his mother, and it just didn’t do it for me. There wasn’t anything I was watching that made me think about my own mother on any deep, affecting level. That’s the ticket to getting me emotionally invested; make me think about something real.

So, ya. I’m a little disappointed. But, that isn’t to say I didn’t enjoy it. I did. Truly. I am excited for the next film. It’s not one of my favorite movies, but it IS competently made. And GORGEOUS. Thank god for that.

Part 2 has a love story. If they can pull that off…well, then we really have something. I hope they do.

Exhausted. But, the bed has fresh sheets. I can’t wait to snooze.

Night night 🙂
