K, so I watched the 1977 version of Suspiria tonight. It was…also wild. Very much more in a way of its time, just like the new one is, I suppose. Which is to say, it was much more a slasher film plus. Mostly slasher stuff, but with extras. Extras like a really intense soundtrack (apparently supplied by a beloved prog rock band called Goblin), super intense, vivid colors, and the occult in the climax. Not particularly scary or disturbing by our standards today, but that’s always the case, isn’t it? Older movies like that are still effective on the moody side of things rather than actual scares. And I wasn’t looking for something scary, really, I was just looking for something interesting, and it was. The new movie does better with certain things, like the mythology, and the dancing, but while the new one is very much following in footsteps, the original is clearly far more of a trail blazer, and I respect it for that. It’s far more raw and unrefined, but there are merits to that, certainly.
I recommend watching both, actually. Neither is perfect, and I think most will prefer the original in the end, but I think both are interesting.
Night night.
