Well…the Niners yet again have played in a super bowl and lost. We played well. REALLY well. Both defenses were elite. Both teams struggled mightily to score all game. It went all the way DEEP into overtime, but by the end, Patrick Mahomes had one more touchdown drive in him than we did. We kicked a field goal. He threw a wide open, game-winning touchdown.
The loss wasn’t on our defense. It wasn’t on our offense. Both had opportunities to win the game and couldn’t quite do it, but that was far outpaced by all the plays both of them DID make. We played an excellent game of football…which is what makes this loss so hard to swallow. Mahomes was just a hair better. The elite type of quarterback that can just win you a championship. Montana was like that. Brady was like that. And now Mahomes is like that. It’s hard to be one of the “other” teams when there’s one of that all-timers out there playing for someone else. Like Peyton Manning during Brady’s era. Or Marino during Montana’s.
That said…still very possible to win one. Or even two. You just have to kinda lucky. Mahomes won’t win every year. Gotta sneak in and do it then. There’s still time. But…man. I really thought we might actually do it. We could have. In several key moments, it was right there, and we just couldn’t quite do it.
Sigh.
It’s hard being a sports fan. Your team almost never wins it all. It’s so, soooo rare. The Niners may not win another super bowl in my lifetime. That’s entirely possible. It’s probably more likely than not, actually. But, still, I have hope.
Night night.
