Today I learned that Cortes Bank, one of those wild spots out in the middle of the ocean where waves actually break, is off the California coastline. It’s 100 miles out there, but I had no idea.
I remember first learned about Cortes Bank, I thiiiiink, from the movie Step Into Liquid, which was a surfing doc that came out when I was deep into movie-watching, back in the early aughts. Man, I’d go and see three movies a week, sometimes. I loved it. The span from, about, 1999 to…2003? Something like that? I’d see 100+ movies a year. It was one of my favorite pastimes. Anyway, it was wild watching these tow-in surfers go out into the middle of the ocean and ride these MASSIVE, deep, deep blue waves.
Not so coincidentally, I think this last episode of the HBO show 100 Foot Wave was maybe the best of the show so far? They went out to Cortes Bank, the footage was absolutely incredible, and the music, too, from Ira Glass, was spectacular. An incredible show. It should win awards, it’s that good.

It’s funny, the first thing that comes to mind for today is the fact that I sent in Cooper’s insurance claims for all the follow-up stuff we did after his (suspected) seizure incident. For whatever reason—I think it’s the anxiety that they’ll turn it down, if I really think simply about it—it’s really, really, really hard for me to send in those claims, even though it literally takes five minutes. But I did it. Whew.
I didn’t write. It was too much today. I’m exhausted. Completely exhausted from the push to get all those pages done and then immediately going off on a trip to visit my family. I wasn’t really able to take it easy today, though. Work was busy. All day. And I had to go and get impressions of my teeth done, too, for a new night guard, because Joy destroyed my previous one, the little bugger.
Just struck me that I should have asked if I could get two of them made instead of just the one. A backup. Dang. I’ll call tomorrow and see if that’s possible. It’s expensive as heeelllll, so might be worth it. I’m guessing the most expensive part of the process is getting the mold of my teeth, anyway. We’ll see.
But, yeah. Busy day. Ready for the sleeps. Night nigh.
