Today I learned about The Eddie. It’s a big wave invitational surfing competition that takes place on Oahu’s north shore every year that the conditions are right for it…which can sometimes be once every five to ten years! Crazy, right?! They’ll literally only hold it when the conditions line up properly for it. I respect that. Waves gotta be biiiiig, you know?

It’s named after a surfing legend, Eddie Aikau. Hawaiian native. Lifeguard who saved literally hundreds of people’s lives while on duty. He died paddling on his surfboard back towards shore after the boat he was on—a replica of an ancient Hawaiian outrigger filled with his family and friends—capsized in big swells, going for help. He disappeared, never seen again. The ocean swallowed him up.

A legend. I can’t believe I’d never heard about him before.

Finally, a less crazy day. I was able to go to Costco with Liz and get groceries. Went and got burritos. We sat down together and caught up on some TV. It was a normal day. Got my Netflix work done early and nothing else rolled in. Whew!

This weekend…chilling. Recharging. Then next week: back at it baby! Let’s get this book written.

Oh, got my new mouth guard. Joy destroyed my last one. Almost six hundred dollars for this one! Jesus! But, it’s done. I have it.

Almost finished with my Star Trek book I was reading because it makes me think of a story idea I have at the moment. Also almost done with the Sanderson book The Way of Kings, my first ever reading of him. It’s been…I’d say objectively too slow. Far, far too slow. Almost nothing has happened in this book…until now. Finally. I have the next book already purchased, ready to go, but I don’t know if I’ll do it. We’ll see. It’s not like The Name of the Wind where I was absolutely blown away. This is still very good…but man…noooooothing has happened in this book. We’ll see how it ends. As slow as it’s been, the writing has always been solid, and I have faith it’ll be satisfying, so there’s that at least. We’ll see.

Night night.
