Today I learned that Brett McKenzie and Jemaine Clement of Flight of the Conchords were roommates in college, and that’s how they started performing together. Taika Waititi was also at the college at the same time, and they were in at least a couple different comedy groups together. Brett and Jemaine took Conchords to the Fringe festival in Edinburg for two years, and it was after that they got their first TV gig with HBO on a program back then called One Night Stand, half hour stand-up comedy specials.
I watched that first TV appearance today on YouTube. They’re instantly funny. The entire act, everything they’d go on to be together, is all there right from their very first appearance. The awkwardness, the dry humor, the way Brett will start a sentence and Jemaine will finish it, the silliness of their songs and they way they almost always give me a peak into how they came up with the song in the first place. It’s usually a silly turn of phrase or rhyme, a silly metaphor, or sometimes just the beginning of an improv scenario and things escalate from there.
Love those guys. Highly recommend.

Not a productive day for me, sigh. I was too wiped from yesterday, and then couldn’t recover today when I kinda waited all day for some work stuff to resolve so I could move forward. But, that’s okay. I’ll be back at it tomorrow!
Night night.
