Today wasn’t the day I finished the book…but that day will come TOMORROW. Can’t wait. Didn’t write like gangbusters today like I thought I might, but that’s okay. I still got almost ten pages out.
Watched the first game of Wrexham in the Championship. They fell apart a bit just at the very end and lost a 1-0 lead to lose 1-2 with both goals coming in the final six minutes. The biggest loss, truly, though was our new striker going down with an ankle injury. Sounds like a sprain. He’ll miss a month or two. Brutal, considering he was CLEARLY our best player out there. Massive dude. Fast. Skilled. Our one goal was one he made happen in conjunction with our other head-and-shoulders best player I’ve seen on the team in my very limited time watching them: Josh Windass. Boy howdy, he’s everywhere out there. And he can whip passes in like you wouldn’t believe.
So…I’m worried about how we’ll start the season if Moore is out. Sam Smith came in for him when he went off and was just so clearly not at the same level. Maybe I’m selling him short. I dunno. In contrast, clearly, Southampton’s subs were on another freaking level. I’m not sure we even got fatigued so much as they were just better than us once those subs came in. Not sure why they didn’t start, maybe they’re getting their legs under them still, but I think Southampton wasn’t playing quite a fell strength to start the game in terms of their best starting XI.
Wrexham still have a signing or two to make. Our defense isn’t quite up to snuff. And if Moore is out for several weeks—even if he’s not—another head-and-shoulders elite player up front is necessary. Birmingham also played their first game against a relegated Premier League team. They managed a draw. We did not. Not good enough. We’ll need to improve…at least if we want to be fighting at the top. Based on what I saw today, I think (hope?) we’re already good enough to stay in the Championship. But if we want to fight? Still have a level to get to.
Anyway…so excited and glad that Wrexham is back. Soon…basketball. And maybe football? I don’t know. We’ll see. After losing the super bowl, I’ve lost faith a bit in this era of the Niners. I don’t think we can put it together. But, we’ll see.
Sports!
Night night.
