Tonight’s fine distinction is “deep web” versus “dark web.”
Definitely heard of the latter and know what it is, but even though I’d heard the former, I never really thought about what it means.
The “dark web” is, of course, the type of websites you can only reach with special software that hides your identity, doesn’t come up in any sort of web search, and is mostly used for illegal activities, some of which is absolutely monstrous.
The “deep web” is any website or page without a website that will also not come up on any sort of search, and that you can only access by logging into that particular website. Like…your Gmail. Or your bank account.
Apparently, estimates for the surface web, which to be honest is what I usually think of as the internet, which is to say public-facing pages anyone can access, make up only about 4% of the web.
Deep web makes up 90% of it.
Dark web 6%.
Wild. And unnerving in terms of that last number.
I set off the house alarm tonight by accident. Got my blood pressure all up right before bed. Sigh.
Another busy day. But I did good on my writing. And got all my Netflix work done.
Time for sleep.
