Today, we’re finely distinguishing between “First Cousins” and “Once-removed.
First, Second, etc. is determined by the distance of a common ancestor…ie- grandparents. Simply put, we count the number of “g’s.” Shared grandparents, one “g,” means First cousins. Shared great-grandparents, two “g’s,” Second cousins.
Removal has to do with generational differences. Once removed is one generation difference. Twice removed is two generations. So, my parent’s cousins are my cousins…once removed. My grandparent’s cousins are my cousins twice removed.
In terms of combining the two, you take whichever is the lesser “g” of the shared ancestor, and then add the number of generations. So…let’s take my parent’s first cousins. That’s going to be “once removed.” Easy. The ancestors we share are my great-grandparents, their grandparents. So, I take the lesser “g”—first cousins—and add the once removed. My parents’ first cousins are my first cousins, once removed.
Another easy way to think of it, in terms of differentiating the terms: the further one goes with first, second, third, etc, the less related you are. The further you go with removed, the larger the age gap.
Cool! 🙂

It rained today. Like, poured. Buckets. Cats and dogs. It was grand.
I didn’t have a great day writing-wise in terms of getting my butt into my chair, so I need to buckle down on that shit and get my stuff done tomorrow. It’s time to get this outline roughed in. That’ll be the attempt tomorrow, anyway.
Reviews for the new book continue to trickle in, and the returns are good. Great, in fact. Which is heartening, because I’m really happy with the way that book turned out. Keep ‘em coming! I want to know what everyone thinks.
We watched Grand Designs while the rain pitter-pattered outside tonight. That was absolutely lovely. Watched a little of the Warriors pre-season, too. We played great. Beat the Blazers. Work was less hectic today, which was a relief. Should be more steady for the rest of the week.
We cozy af up in here. Night night.
