You can get away with a lot of shit if you stick the landing.
We finished our Marvel Cinematic Universe re-watch today…or, rather, ALMOST finished, since technically the second Spider-Man stand-alone is still part of “Phase 4 Part 2”…but we all know Endgame was the last movie of this generation.
It’s…
Spectacular.
I didn’t have an objective sense of these movies the first time I watched them, but particularly Endgame. It was the END. So much hype and energy and exhaustion with how many movies and so many years, and it was all crowding the moment of watching the movie, really, with any sense of whether or not it worked or was any good.
It works. It’s good. In fact, it’s rather astonishing just how good it is. They went back to basics and made a MOVIE. The told a STORY, tried and true, and they executed the shit out of it. It’s not a mess. It’s tight. It knows exactly what it is.
They stick the landing.
The more stories I consume, the more I realize just how rare that is. They earned every big emotional moment in that movie. It’s rather astounding.
The first Avengers still might be the best of the lot, but Endgame is probably my pick for second best, and it might be even more impressive than that given how impossible it is for so much of storytellers to properly finish a story. Amazing.
Did laundry. Ate some cheetos. Played music.
Sleep now.
