I once saw the word “esports” and read it as eh-sports, like it was a spanish word. Even knowing in the back of my head that deportes is the actual spanish word for “sports.” Only later did I realize that it means eSports…
But now I refer to sports as esports all the time, faux latin pronunciation and all.
Today was a a big day in esports.
Niners in a WILD wild wild game—easily one of the wildest wins I’ve seen in a very very long time—beat the Rams to secure a spot in the postseason. They may lose next week in the very first round, but goddammit they made it, which I did NOT see coming either going into this game, or during it for large chunks. We went down 17-0, came back to tie it, threw an interception in the red zone with the chance to go ahead, coughed up the lead, led a desperate 90-second touchdown drive with NO TIMEOUTS to tie it again and send it into overtime…and then failed to score the game-winning touchdown but settled for a field goal instead…let the Rams put together a last desperate drive of their own before a game-winning, walk-off interception finally, fiiinnaalllyyy sealed it.
What a win.
And THEN…
Klay Thompson came back for his first game in two full seasons. He looked great. The Dubs won. It was magic.
What a day in Bay Area esports.
Now…sleep. Night night.
