Had much of my writing rhythm disrupted today BUT…I knew that was going to happen, so I made sure I got in some hours early.

I can reliably write three good pages an hour. GOOD pages. No rushing. Stopping to fix stuff as I go. Clean enough prose to give it an easy polish later in the week. Hour in, hour out. Three pages.

That is SO HELPFUL TO KNOW. That’s my rhythm. I can count on it whether I’m having a good writing day or a bad one. I have a lot less bad writing days knowing that’s my pace. And I can schedule. I know how many hours I have to find in order to finish a book. The relief of that is likewise palpable.

I think what I’ve found in my first week is that I simply cannot write 20 pages a day with a full time job and the rest of my life duties. It’s just not feasible. BUT…I can write 15 pages. And I can do that for five days in a week. I’m about to do just that. THAT is doable. And on days where my time is more clear than others, I think I can stretch and aim for that 20.

The next feat is going to be figuring out when, where and for how long it’s going to take me to go back and edit the pages I write each week. That’s a huge, huge part of nailing this process down.

This weekend.

Night night.
