There are many things that I’m passionate about. One is that, by far, I prefer the original Star Wars trilogy pre-specialized; the versions I grew up on, that all of us who are a certain age grew up on. Don’t get me wrong, when the updated versions hit theaters, I was super excited to go see them and even very much enjoyed them…but my favorite versions of the movies have always been the originals. But there’s never been a release of them. …Not officially, anyway.
Enter: Despecialized (and another project called 4k77). Fans have gotten their hands on prints of the film back when it was being shown in theaters. They’ve used those prints to make digital remasters of the movies before Lucas changed them. And, if you’re enterprising, you can find copies of them across the internet.
Certain people definitely abuse this. They sell copies. That, for obvious reasons—like, it’s majorly freaking illegal—I’d never condone. And I can’t say that I officially condone the fact that these fan editions even exist, because just the creation of them is technically not allowed either, nor would I ever say that I have them, myself…but I will say that the original, despecialized versions of those movies are and will always be the best versions…and I hope we get official releases of them someday.
I wrote today. My arm itches. It was cold. We went to Costco. Now…sleep. Night night!
