New work computer, which is kinda wild. I’ve had my laptop and iMac Pro from Netflix since the end of 2018, so almost 8 years. They lasted me a long time. The iMac Pro in particular. It’s been a beast. Still is, and I guess you’d want it to be considering that computer cost $10k at the time. I looked it up. They spec’d it to the tippy top on the stuff that really matters, processor and ram. But…applications have changed. It was definitely starting to show its age, not least of which because it couldn’t even handle the latest operating system. It was time.
The new laptop I have is definitely not the beast the iMac Pro was, but it will do. It will be much more efficient with the programs I use for work, it will handle whatever this next wave of AI is, and although I don’t think it will be an improvement on render times, it shouldn’t be a step back either, really. We’ll see. I spent all day, pretty much, getting the old machines ready to hand back in, and then setting up the new one. Thankfully I’d worked late yesterday to clear the decks for doing that today, and it worked. I was able to spend my time handling that, and work didn’t suffer. Whew.
I do still want to buy myself a new computer. Liz has hers. I do want my own, still. But now is not the right time to do it. Not to spec one out, anyway. Prohibitively expensive at the moment with the memory shortage. When that calms down, hopefully those upgrade prices come down, too. Those base model price increases are here to stay, I’m afraid. But I’m hoping the upgrades become more affordable, because that’s what really makes the difference performance-wise and longevity-wise. The reason I could use the same computer for work for eight years is because it was maxed out on CPU and RAM. Those beefcakes masked the changes in software.
Writing this morning was great. Writing later on didn’t happen. I was too wiped. It’s very stressful doing anything like that with my computers. I really rely on them in so many ways to be set up and ready to go everyday. Fiddling with that is always a massive energy drain. BUT.
Back at it tomorrow. Tomorrow will be a full day, as will Friday. I’ll see what I can make up over this weekend and next, and we’ll get those first 100+ pages off right on time.
Night night.
