Thiiiiis close to getting the Netflix project across the finish line. This. Close. I finished my overcut today, which is to say, I swapped out all our temporary footage with the final stuff. Good LORD it took a long time. Very, very precise work. Some stuff had been built in one program, other stuff in another, which made it tough because the settings don’t necessarily translate 1-to-1. That, and because this project was a sizzle reel, one of the main features of the edit was to use as much footage as possible, so there were a TON of clips. Took me all day yesterday and all day today. Sigh.
Hopefully now it’s just a matter of getting the final GFX render back and marrying it to the sound mix, and we SHIP IT BABY.
Wiped me out. I didn’t get all the writing done I wanted to, but I did enough. I don’t actually know how many pages I did. I did pretty good, I think. Like maybe a page short? Two? So, a solid day. I like the section I’m writing at the moment. It’s fun. A western! I even gave the character a hat. Hopefully people like it.
Finished Spoorloos. I really liked it. Not a perfect film, there were parts of it you didn’t quite buy, which stood out because the majority of the film was startlingly and impressively realistic. And the end was dope, too, if not a little bit random in the sense that the film didn’t prepare you in any way for what the answer was in the end, and I mean specifically where he ended up. It was surprising, but not inevitable, so it lost a little punch for me. Even if it was a really, really great choice. Just set it up a little better.
So, yeah. Not perfect, but still a truly spectacular film. I’d recommend it to anyone. I’ve never seen anything like it, and the way it approaches the subject matter, the characters, the plot and the technique/tone is fucking brilliant. One of the more innovative films I’ve seen in some time, which is mind-bending it was done in the 80s. Change the score and it could have been shot ten years ago. Or the aughts, maybe. Not twenty years before that. Wild.
